Edelény’s position on the Bódva corridor means it is a convenient base for exploring the wider Northern Hungary hinterland. The town sits on a regional line that links Miskolc to the Slovak border, with a reliable hourly service that allows a three‑hour round‑trip to the historic mining town of Ózd or the thermal spa of Sajóspatak. For cyclists, the flat riverbank path from Edelény to the nearby village of Szajol offers a 15‑kilometre stretch punctuated by small farms and pepper‑corn fields, making it ideal for a half‑day ride that ends with a coffee at a family‑run café. Timing your return for the late afternoon guarantees you’ll miss the commuter rush and still catch the sunset over the low hills.
While Eastern Hungarian cuisine is often associated with paprika‑laden stews, the freshwater bounty of the Bódva River deserves a separate mention. Small, silvery trout are traditionally pan‑fried in butter with a sprinkling of lemon zest and served on a bed of sautéed leeks—a dish you’ll find on menus at modest eateries tucked behind the main square. The preparation is intentionally simple, letting the river’s clean flavour shine through. Pair it with a glass of dry Tokaji Eszterházy for a balanced palate, and you’ll experience a taste profile that is both regional and reflective of the town’s proximity to the water.
A short walk north of Edelény lies an old limestone quarry that has been repurposed into an outdoor venue for seasonal performances and community workshops. The raw, echoing walls provide an acoustic backdrop for folk ensembles during summer evenings, and the site also hosts a monthly market where local artisans sell handcrafted stoneware and woven textiles. Visiting the quarry after a guided walk through the nearby forest trails offers a contrast between industrial heritage and contemporary creativity, showcasing how the town balances preservation with adaptive reuse.

It lies in the valley of Bódva River, 25 km (16 mi) north of the county seat, Miskolc. The historic L'Huillier-Coburg Palace is located there.
[edit] The area has been inhabited since ancient times (Paleolithic stone tools were found here). Edelény was first mentioned in 1299, but the village of Borsod, which was annexed to the town in the 20th century, was already mentioned in 1108 (Borsod comitatus belonged to the castle of Borsod in the Middle Ages). The residents of Edelény worked in agriculture in mediaeval times. During the Turkish occupation of Hungary, the town was deserted several times. In the 19th century, industry became more important in the area. In 1838, a sugar factory was built, and a brown coal mine was opened. The Jewish population (1910: 8.3%; 1941: 7.9%) was deported and murdered in early June 1944. Two nearby villages were annexed to Edelény: Borsod in 1950, and Finke in 1963. Edelény got town status in 1986.
