While Cholpon‑Ata’s summer allure is its lakefront promenade and sun‑baked sand, the town undergoes a quiet transformation as the season turns. In late autumn the water’s turquoise fades to a slate‑grey, and the surrounding mountains catch the first snows, creating a striking contrast that appeals to photographers and hikers alike. Local guesthouses, many of which shut down for the high season, open a few rooms for winter trekkers seeking affordable bases to explore the northern Issyk‑Kul ridge. The reduced tourist flow means you can wander the promenade without crowds, and the nearby petroglyph site is far more contemplative when the wind carries the scent of pine. Packing layered clothes and a pair of sturdy boots lets you enjoy both lake‑side relaxation and mountain excursions in one trip.
Cholpon‑Ata’s streets are dotted with modest cafés that retain the layout of a Soviet-era kolkhoz canteen: long communal tables, simple metal chairs and an unpretentious menu of plov, beshbarmak and freshly brewed tea. These venues are more than eateries; they are informal meeting points where locals discuss everything from livestock prices to the latest regional election. Ordering a cup of black tea and striking up a conversation can lead to an unexpected invitation to a family gathering, where you might taste homemade kurt (dried cheese) and hear anecdotes about the town’s peak tourism years. This grassroots hospitality offers a deeper glimpse into everyday life than the polished hotel lobbies catering to organised tours.
Travelers often compare Cholpon‑Ata with its neighbour Balykchy, another lakeside settlement at the western tip of Issyk‑Kul. Where Balykchy is a transport hub with a bustling bus station and a utilitarian feel, Cholpon‑Ata leans into its resort identity, offering a wider selection of spas and cultural venues such as the open‑air sculpture park. However, Balykchy’s proximity to the lake’s narrowest point makes it a convenient launchpad for day‑trips into the interior valleys, while Cholpon‑Ata’s longer, flatter shoreline provides better conditions for windsurfing and paddle‑boarding. Choosing between the two depends on whether you prioritise a relaxed lakeside ambience or a logistical base for deeper excursions into the Kyrgyz highlands.

It is the administrative center of the Issyk-Kul District of Issyk-Kul Region; this district occupies most of the lake's north shore. To the west along highway A363 is Tamchy and to the east is Bosteri. The town contains numerous large and small sanatoria, hotels and guesthouses to accommodate the many visitors who descend upon the lake in summer. During the Soviet era it was much frequented by vacationers brought here in organized mass tours from other parts of the USSR. Holidaymakers now usually visit on their own or in small groups and originate mainly from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Russia with some tourists from other countries. Attracting more demanding foreign tourists will require upgrading of the existing facilities, but the location is certainly attractive.[citation needed] The view of the imposing alpine ranges of the Tian Shan across the lake is impressive.[citation needed] There is a local museum and an open-air site with about 2000 petroglyphs dating from 800 BC to 1200AD. The first three World Nomad Games were held in Cholpon-Ata, in 2014, 2016, and 2018.
