Ao Nang (Thai: อ่าวนาง, pronounced [ʔàːw nāːŋ]) is a resort town and one of the ten subdistricts (tambon) of Mueang Krabi District, Krabi, Thailand.
While Ao Nang’s shoreline draws most visitors, the surrounding limestone karsts conceal quieter villages where daily life unfolds at a slower pace. A short motorbike ride inland leads to Ban Klang, a modest settlement where wooden stilt houses line a rice paddy still tended by hand. Here, sunrise is marked by the soft clatter of water buffalo, and a local market offers fresh tropical fruit still unprocessed for tourists. Pairing a beach morning with an afternoon in these hamlets provides a contrast that deepens the sense of place, reminding travellers that the town’s popularity rests on a broader, still‑working agricultural landscape.
Ao Nang’s climate follows the typical tropical monsoon pattern, with rains peaking from May to October. During this period, the sea becomes churned and certain boat trips to nearby islands are curtailed, but the reduced crowds reveal a different side of the town. Local eateries fill with residents seeking warm bowls of tom yum, and the surrounding jungle trails become mist‑enshrouded, accentuating the scent of wet earth and orchids. Visiting in the shoulder months of November or early December offers a balance: still enough sunshine for beachtime, yet the tranquility of a post‑rain atmosphere that many guidebooks overlook.
The most efficient way to explore Ao Nang’s coastal stretch is on a rented scooter, which costs a fraction of organised tours and grants freedom to pause at overlooked spots – a tiny cove hidden behind a rock arch, or a modest fishing jetty where locals unload their catch. Carry a reusable water bottle and a lightweight rain‑poncho; the tropical sun is intense, and sudden showers are common. For nightfall, stray away from the main promenade and wander towards the small temple perched on a hill; its lantern‑lit steps offer an unexpected viewpoint of the town’s twinkling lights, far removed from the bustling bar strips.

[edit] Ao Nang is a central point of the coastal province of Krabi, Thailand. The town consists chiefly of a main street, which is dominated by restaurants, pubs, shops and other commerce aimed at tourists. The main beach is used by sunbathers to a certain extent, but there are a large number of long-tail boats which offer access to other beaches on the mainland and on nearby islands.
[edit] Ao Nang has a wastewater treatment plant that is able to handle about 3,000 m3 of wastewater per day, not nearly enough, according to Ao Nang Administrative Organization (Or Bor Tor) President Pankum Kittithonkun.
